Here is a set of charts Rich meticulously transcribed and/or arranged recently for a Horace Silver Tribute concert featuring standard jazz quintet instrumentation (the tenor saxophonist doubled on alto sax on three tunes). These Horace Silver Quintet charts are for Trumpet, Tenor/Alto Sax, Piano, Bass and Drums (with a couple of optional vocal numbers), and include the following titles:

• Mayreh • Creepin’ In • Diggin’ on Dexter • Nica’s Dream • Doodlin’ • Opus de Funk

• Peace • Pretty Eyes • Quicksilver • Sayonara Blues • The St. Vitus Dance • Strollin’

• The African Queen • The Preacher • Out of the Night Came You • Soulville

• Song For My Father • and a bonus chart on Cookin’ at the Continental.

This is a total of 18 complete quintet charts, transcribed from the original recordings complete with all the different out-chorus stuff that other people don’t always seem to include in their hastily prepared arrangements.

Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt’s 35 Basic Points of the Pivot System
Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt later regretted the choice of both words in the umbrella title for his teaching: Pivot System. He had taken the word “pivot” from the golf links, and the word “system” he later decided was a bad choice. Reinhardt’s definition of pivot in brass playing has nothing to do with what most brass players call a pivot. The word system leads one to believe that there is one hard and fast way of doing things. And in later years Reinhardt was repeatedly heard saying that “there are as many systems as there are players.”
